More Than Ice Cubes on the Eaves – A Wall of Ice!
Saturday morning: You step outside, the air is fresh; you’re getting ready to shovel the walkway. Then you look up only to see long stalactites lined up along the eaves, forming a wall of ice!
A visit to your attic might be necessary. But if you’re like most people, you rarely go there at all, and even less to verify if it is properly insulated or ventilated.
Yet when these two factors – a lack of insulation and poor ventilation – are combined, a “wall of ice” will almost inevitably form!
Once large ice slabs are firmly attached to the eaves and embedded in the gutters, they can cause significant damage.
Walls of ice prevent water from snowmelt or rain from draining properly. This means that it will accumulate under the shingles and possibly leak into the attic.
